The brief

Iver Construction was asked to replace a tired driveway at a 1930s semi-detached house on a residential road in Guildford, Surrey. The existing surface was a mixture of cracked concrete and uneven tarmac that had been patched several times over the years. Water pooled in two places after rain, the edge restraint had collapsed where the front garden sloped down to the pavement, and the surface was stained with oil and moss. The homeowners wanted a block-paved finish in a charcoal and brindle mix, with a clear fall towards the road and discreet drainage channels along the front of the garage.

We were brought in to supply the aggregates and fixings for the sub-base and bedding layers. The contractor's design called for a permeable sub-base of 20mm shingle over the excavated ground, followed by a sharp sand bedding layer on which the block paving would be laid. Because the road was busy and the pavement narrow, every delivery had to be timed precisely and the materials had to be placed where they would not obstruct pedestrians or neighbours.

A site visit in late October confirmed the details. The drive sloped gently from the garage down to the pavement, with a crossfall towards the house on the left-hand side that had contributed to the pooling. The pavement was used by parents walking to a nearby primary school, so morning deliveries were out of the question. There was no front garden wall on one side, only a low hedge, which meant that offloaded material had to be kept within the footprint of the drive itself. We measured the area, calculated the compacted thickness of shingle needed for the sub-base, and confirmed the quantity of sharp sand required for the bedding layer.

The homeowners wanted the work completed before the Christmas season, when family visits would make parking at the front essential. That gave Iver Construction a two-week window starting in mid-November. We priced the materials and agreed next-day availability, with the option to hold a reserve at our yard in case the excavation revealed deeper soft spots that needed additional shingle.

The challenge

Driveway jobs in busy residential streets create a cluster of pressures: access, sequencing, drainage and keeping the front of the property tidy. The Guildford driveway opened straight onto a pavement used by pedestrians, with no room for a wagon to wait while the contractor moved plant or barriers. We used a 7.5-tonne tipper that could reverse into the drive, tip the load and leave within a few minutes, booking drops after the morning school run and before the afternoon collection.

Sequencing was critical. The old surface had to be lifted and removed before the sub-base could be spread and compacted, and the sharp sand bedding had to go down only once the shingle was level and firm. We split the aggregate supply into matched drops so that the site never held surplus material that would block the pavement or the front path. The first drop was the bulk of the shingle, the second was the sharp sand and a small top-up of shingle for any low spots.

Drainage and edge restraint also shaped the design. The old driveway had failed partly because there was no proper edge restraint on the garden side, allowing the blocks to spread under vehicle load. The new specification included concrete edgings bedded on mortar along both sides, with a recessed drainage channel across the front of the garage where water had been pooling. Although the blocks and edgings were supplied by the paving merchant, our sharp sand provided the bedding for the edgings and our shingle formed the free-draining layer beneath the channel.

The front of the property had to stay presentable because neighbours and pedestrians passed throughout the day. We supplied dust-suppressed aggregates and made sure every tip was swept clean before the driver left. The driver also carried a brush and a shovel so that any material spilled onto the pavement could be cleared immediately.

November weather added uncertainty. Rain would slow the excavation and make the sharp sand clump, while frost could make the shingle sub-base difficult to compact. We watched the forecast closely and were prepared to hold the sharp sand at our yard if a wet spell was predicted, because wet bedding sand is hard to screed level.

Materials we supplied

Iver Construction sent us the landscaper's schedule and we priced the aggregate and fixing pack in one quote, then split it across two drops that matched the excavation and laying sequence. The exact quantities supplied to the Guildford site were:

The seven tonnes of 20mm shingle formed the permeable sub-base across the full driveway area. After excavation, the ground was levelled and the shingle was spread in two layers, each compacted with a plate compactor to form a stable, free-draining base. Because the existing subgrade was a mixture of clay and old hardcore, the shingle provided the consistent bearing layer that the old surface had lacked.

The five tonnes of sharp sand were used for the bedding layer on which the block paving was laid. The sand was screeded to a uniform thickness, typically around 25mm, and was kept damp enough to compact but dry enough to screed level. We supplied washed sharp sand with a low fines content so that it would drain rather than hold water beneath the blocks.

The five boxes of galvanized nails and three boxes of high-performance wood screws were used for the temporary formwork and for fixing timber edge restraints during the laying process. The screws were also useful for securing the timber profiles that the contractor used to set the levels and falls before screeding the sand.

We inspected the shingle and sharp sand at our yard before dispatch to make sure they were clean and correctly graded. A load of shingle that arrived from the quarry with excessive fines was rejected before it could be sent to Guildford, and the sharp sand was stored under cover so that it reached the site in a workable condition.

Delivery and logistics

The Guildford deliveries were planned around the two-week programme and the school-run timetable. The first drop arrived on the morning the old surface was lifted, when the excavation was open and the contractor's digger was on site. The seven tonnes of shingle were tipped directly onto the prepared subgrade, and the gang spread the material in two layers, compacting each one before the next was added.

The second drop arrived three days later, once the shingle sub-base had been levelled and compacted. This drop contained the five tonnes of sharp sand and a small additional quantity of shingle to fill a soft spot that the contractor had found near the garage entrance. The sand was tipped onto the compacted shingle and covered with a tarpaulin because rain was forecast for the following day.

The nails and screws were delivered with the second drop, packed in boxes and labelled so that the joiner could find them quickly. We kept a small reserve of screws at the yard in case the contractor needed extra for the profiles or edge restraints.

The driver for both drops was the same person, so he learned the access, the tipping point and the neighbour's hedge position. That familiarity meant the second drop was placed exactly where the contractor wanted it, without the need for lengthy reversing instructions.

Communication was handled through a single scheduler at our trade counter. The contractor texted the evening before each drop to confirm the timing, and we adjusted the route sheet to avoid the school-run periods. When a shower was forecast for the morning of the second drop, we brought the delivery forward by two hours so that the sand could be tipped and covered before the rain arrived.

The build

The two-week programme began with the removal of the old concrete and tarmac surface. The contractor hired a small breaker and a mini-digger because the access was too tight for larger plant. The excavation revealed the reasons for the previous failures: a patch of clay near the garage door that held water, a buried section of old edging that had created a hard point, and a fall towards the house on the left side that sent rainwater against the front wall.

The groundworker corrected the levels, removing the buried edging and blending the clay patch with additional shingle once our first drop arrived. The shingle sub-base was spread in two 100mm layers, each compacted with a plate compactor. The contractor checked the levels with a straightedge and a spirit level to make sure the fall ran towards the road and the new drainage channel.

Once the sub-base was firm and level, the sharp sand bedding layer was screeded to thickness. The contractor laid timber profiles along the edges to guide the screeding and fixed them with the screws we had supplied. The concrete edgings were then bedded on a mortar mix that used sand from the bedding stock, with the galvanized nails used to secure temporary formwork.

The block paving was laid from the back of the drive towards the road, with cuts made around the drainage channel and the front path. The contractor checked alignment and level regularly, and any bedding sand that was disturbed was re-screeded before the next section was laid. Once the full area was paved, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the surface was compacted again.

The final day was spent cleaning the pavement, removing the timber profiles and tidying the verge. The driveway was left ready for the homeowners to use, with a consistent fall and no visible puddles after the first rainfall.

The result

The driveway is now a smart, level surface with neat edgings, a consistent fall that drains cleanly towards the road, and a recessed channel across the garage front that captures the water that used to pool. It gives the front of the Guildford house a fresh appearance and is wide enough for two cars to park side by side.

Iver Construction told us that the timing of the deliveries was the key to completing the job in two weeks. Because the shingle arrived exactly when the excavation was ready and the sand arrived exactly when the sub-base was compacted, the gang never had to stop and wait or work around surplus material stored on the pavement.

The homeowners reported that the surface stayed level through its first winter, with no spreading at the edges and no pooling after heavy rain. The block colour and pattern matched the sample they had chosen, and the edging along the garden side restored the neat boundary that had been missing for years.
