Sheet materials are the engineered wood panels used for flooring, roofing, wall sheathing and formwork: OSB3, moisture-resistant chipboard (P5), softwood shuttering plywood and hardwood plywood. They are sold in standard 8x4 sheets (2440x1220mm) and specified by thickness, such as 18mm for flooring.
OSB3 is an oriented strand board rated for load-bearing use in humid conditions - a cost-effective choice for flooring and sheathing. Plywood is made of thin wood veneers bonded together and is preferred for shuttering and where a smoother face is needed.
P5 moisture-resistant chipboard (commonly 18mm or 22mm tongue-and-groove) is the standard flooring deck. OSB3 18mm is also used for flat roof decking and general structural panels.
Most panels are sold as 8x4 sheets (2440x1220mm), with some lines such as 18mm T&G OSB3 available in 2400x600mm. Thicknesses range from 11mm to 22mm depending on the application.
